Nea Moni is the Byzantine monastery complex in the central part of Chios, 11 kilometers from the city. It has been designated a World Heritage Site and is protected by UNESCO.
It was founded in the mid-11th century with imperial sponsorship, while according to tradition, a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was the reason for the construction of the temple.
